José Martinez Silva

Jury member for the Interior Space Architecture category, 2020 edition

José Martinez Silva (born in Lisbon, 1966), graduated from the School of Architecture and Technology of the University of Lisbon (UTL) in 1989. Between 1990-1991 he collaborated with architects João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Gonçalo Byrne. In 1991 he started working individually, and in 1996 he founded Atelier Central Arquitectos, being the company’s CEO and Chief Architect. In 2001-2009, alongside architect Miguel Beleza, he founded ATMB13, an office specialized in branding and corporate design. In 2014, José Martinez, together with architect Paulo Cirne, created ATCENTRAL Group, in the perspective of an international sustainability based on partnerships with potential foreign architects.
Due to the numerous recognitions and distinctions received for his activity in the field, in 1999 he was awarded the “Conde de Oeiras”, the Municipal Prize for Architecture, and in 2011 he was awarded the Valmor and Municipality Architecture Prize, Lisbon.
He is frequently invited as a guest speaker at conferences, seminars, master classes and dissertations; he has been a member of several juries for competitions of architecture and design.
He is a member of the South Regional Section of the Portuguese Architects Association.
His works have been published in renowned magazines, on websites and blogs, and have been awarded numerous recognitions: 2017 / American Architecture Prize - Firm of the Year / 2016, International Space Design Award Idea-Tops / 2016 - Award for the best design of a cultural space (Montemor-o-Velho School); Architizer A+ Awards (City Sales Outlet BMWi); 2011, Kindergarten, Bicesse.
In 2014, he launched the Start-up myBUILDIN, an online platform that shares free professional know-how.
