Living History is the central theme of the „Living Danube Limes – Valorising cultural heritage and fostering sustainable tourism by LIVING the common heritage on the DANUBE LIMES as basis for a Cultural Route” from the Danube Transnational Programme, gathering 19 partners from 10 different countries. The project covers a study area from Germany to the Black Sea.
The project develops living the history strategies in order to create a new European Cultural Route along the ancient frontier of the Roman Empire along the Danube. In Romania, the Limes contains many archaeological sites still unexplored and inaccessible. One objective of the project is the nominalization of the Roman Limes on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The research has focused first on the study of all Roman archaeological sites along the Danube, to complete the missing data. The result became an exhibition presented at UAUIM with the occasion of the Roman Limes Days. A study on the pilot site of Sacidava developed small projects that would support the inclusion of the site in the international cultural circuit.
The research defined a strategy for the identification of the most suitable non-invasive and reversible interventions to enhance the visibility of the archaeological sites while preserving the historical authentic atmosphere and the local identity. The solutions became a guide for implementing visibility measures in all countries involved in the project.
For the archaeological site of Rasova, the research team created and implemented the project of conversion of the old kindergarten from Rasova into a small Museum for History and Ethnology. The museum hosts the exhibition on the Romanian Danube limes and a hologram of the ancient fortress of Sacidava, produced with the occasion of the workshop: Visibility measures on archaeological sites”.
The project also launched the app. „Living Danube Limes” to enhance the access to archaeological information and virtual reconstructions for the new cultural route.
An important element of the project was the reconstruction with ancient tools and techniques of a Roman boat from the IV th century. The boat sailed on the Danube, connecting all the pilot sites to the terminus point, Hârșova. The arrival at the pilot site of Sacidava was celebrated with a small re-enactment festival and the inauguration of the Museum of Rasova.
