In a context marked by the challenges of climate change and the urgent need to adapt the built environment, ROENEF – the Romanian Association for the Promotion of Energy Efficiency in Buildings – has brought the importance of sustainability to the forefront through a concrete and visible initiative: the Energy Efficiency Caravan, a traveling project that transformed public space into an active manifesto for responsibility, education, and ecological transition.
Organized in major cities across the country – Iași, Constanța, Brașov, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, and Timișoara – the caravan provided a lively platform for meetings between specialists, public authorities, students, and citizens. Through presentations, discussions, and demonstrations of innovative solutions in energy efficiency, the event aimed to create lasting bridges between professionals and the community, strengthening a culture of energy performance in construction.
A central element of the caravan was a modular and mobile demonstration pavilion, positioned at the intersection of architecture, urban installation, and technological education. Designed as a functional and fully energy-autonomous space, the pavilion illustrates what the future of sustainable urban construction can look like. Built on a CLT and glulam structure, with enclosures made of high-performance materials and products with environmental product declarations, including recycled components, this space achieves carbon neutrality. The construction reflects alignment with European legislation and policies on green buildings and complies with the principles of sustainable development promoted by the European Union. At the same time, it highlights the essential role of the built environment in reducing urban pollution and meeting the climate goals established by the European Green Deal. By integrating passive and active solutions, using materials with low environmental impact, and its modular design, the pavilion proposes a scalable model for sustainable and resilient cities.
The caravan was more than a series of events – it was a form of public education, an invitation to collective learning, awareness, and involvement. Through direct dialogue in an accessible setting, the project brought the concepts of energy efficiency and sustainable development closer to people, offering practical solutions and concrete examples.
The project was carried out with the support of the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, the Department for Sustainable Development within the Romanian Government, and the Romanian Association of Energy Auditors for Buildings (AAECR).
Through this initiative, ROENEF reaffirms the essential role of education in the transition to a responsible and future-ready built environment. Public space thus becomes a place of formation, dialogue, and conscious decision-making, where sustainability ceases to be an abstract ideal and becomes part of everyday life.
