The project started from the client's desire to renovate a house with ground floor and partial basement in Mediaș, Sibiu County, and to adapt it to the current needs and standards of life and comfort.
The house currently has 3 separate entrances, accessed from the courtyard, 2 on the ground floor and one on the basement. The first gesture of the project was to solve the entrance to all the spaces of the house through a single place, a fact that led to the proposal of an extension in the courtyard area (which will be freed of the existing garage).
The extension becomes an entry space, but also a place that coagulates and distributes circulations and functions. From and through the new part of the house, access will be made to the kitchen and living room, on the one hand, and to the bedrooms, on the other, but also to the technical and storage space in the basement. Thus, the extension plays the role of articulation between the existing wings of the house.
The day area, the night area and the service area - access, storage, bathrooms (which separate and articulate the first two), are placed on the plan as 3 parallel but interconnected functional lanes. In direct connection with these, a new roof that corresponds planimetrically to the 3 functional lanes, will mark the contemporary intervention on the outside.
The new entrance area, as well as the roof above it, will be glazed, to ensure the penetration of natural light inside. Also, due to the limits of the land plot, the living area will also benefit from zenithal light, coming through the attic windows located in the roof whose soffit is visible from inside the house.
