Midnight Classic Duplex is a residential interior design project located in Bucharest’s Aviației district, designed for a young British couple who work predominantly from home. The project explores the reinterpretation of classical architectural language within a contemporary residential setting, balancing a refined aesthetic with the requirements of a modern, home-based lifestyle.
The concept is rooted in recognizable elements of classical architecture—mouldings, wall panelling, pilasters and decorative ceiling profiles—which are reinterpreted through a restrained composition defined by a deep palette of warm greys, dark green and bronze accents. The contrast between classical geometry and dark, tonal colours creates the nocturnal atmosphere that defines the identity of the project.
The spatial layout responds directly to the clients’ lifestyle, creating a continuous sequence of living, dining and working areas while maintaining visual connections between them. Functional zones are articulated through architectural elements and carefully positioned furniture rather than rigid partitions. Pilasters, smoked glass panels, integrated furniture and framed sightlines create overlapping perspectives, allowing the interior to feel connected while providing distinct areas for different activities.
Materiality plays a central role in defining the atmosphere. Veined dark marble, timber, herringbone flooring, leather and bronze accents are brought together within a controlled palette, balancing mineral and reflective surfaces with warmer, tactile textures. Rather than being treated as individual finishes, the materials are composed as part of a unified spatial language.
One of the key architectural elements is the suspended staircase, where timber treads and vertical black slats create a strong visual connection between the two levels. Its graphic presence allows the staircase to operate simultaneously as a functional element, a spatial filter and a visual focal point.
Lighting is integrated into the architectural composition and developed through several layers: indirect illumination concealed within ceiling profiles, discreet technical lighting and sculptural decorative fixtures. Above the dining area, a suspended installation of individual light elements introduces verticality and acts as a compositional device, visually connecting the surrounding spaces.
Midnight Classic Duplex proposes a contemporary interpretation of the modern-classical interior, where proportion, rhythm, light and materiality work together to create a coherent and timeless atmosphere. Rather than reproducing a classical style, the project seeks to reinterpret it through a contemporary architectural language—more intimate, restrained and expressive, while responding precisely to the lifestyle and everyday needs of its occupants.
