SP(L)INE_Anatomy of Vertical Structure
A spatial dialogue of balance, repetition, and strength
/ The crafted backbone for a modular, human scaled verticality
The project received an Honorable Mention in The Architect’s Stair – Edition #2 international competition. The competition invited participants to reinterpret the stair as an autonomous architectural element, moving beyond its purely functional role as circulation and exploring it as an expression of space, movement, and architectural imagination.
Concept
Sp(l)ine reimagines the stair as a spatial tool — sculptural, mobile, and responsive. Designed around two vertical anchor pillars, this articulated system uses interlocking monolithic modules that pivot and connect freely. The stair is not a fixed path but a flexible sequence — able to turn, bypass obstacles, and adjust itself to the specific spatial and programmatic needs of both interior and exterior environments.
Self-supporting, tool-free, and quick to assemble/disassemble, it works as an architectural kit, bringing verticality where traditional stairs cannot — not only a circulation object but a spatial instrument that adapts, grows, and defines the environments it inhabits.
Modularity & Adaptability
Sp(l)ine is conceived as a truly modular system — flexible in both geometry and function. Each stair module is sculpted with variable thicknesses, optimizing material only where needed for structural stability. These organic profiles not only respond to load distribution but also offer a distinct tactile and visual rhythm. Steps and risers are cast from a mineral composite with exposed aggregates, offering high durability and aesthetic variability. Each component can feature a unique texture or color, enabling intuitive assembly and legibility within the overall system.
The stair operates as a kit of parts, adaptable to a wide range of interior or exterior contexts. Modules are rotatable and multi-orientable, allowing the stair to shift direction, navigate corners, or bypass obstacles with ease. Structural spacers offer fine control over riser height, enabling ergonomic calibration without altering the design language. The dual-pillar support system allows for multiple configurations — from alternating cantilevered steps to mirrored arrangements — optimizing for space and circulation flow.
Vertical connector modules are interchangeable, serving as either handrails or planting holders to support climbing vegetation or vertical gardens. Additional modules provide secure foundation anchoring across varied surfaces. Entirely pre-cast, self-supporting, and free of mechanical fixings, Sp(l)ine is designed for rapid, reversible installation and architectural adaptability at every scale.
