HORIZN: Redefining the Perspective at Trolltunga
HORIZN_Beyond the Edge was awarded Second Prize in the 2025 international competition Troll’s Tongue Observation Platform, which called for a reimagining of the iconic viewpoint at Trolltunga—one of Norway’s most dramatic and photographed natural landmarks. The project aims to enhance the visitor experience through a subtle, safe, and landscape-sensitive architectural intervention that respects the site’s unique topography and character.
The design introduces a 30-meter-long suspended walkway beneath the rock ledge, extending the vertical dimension of the experience without compromising the symbolic value or function of the original platform, which remains reserved for small groups. The new pathway offers visitors a more emotional and visceral connection to the void and the landscape.
The structure is composed of 2-meter prefabricated steel modules (I-profile beams, 20x20 cm), suspended by pre-tensioned steel cables anchored directly into the rock. A semi-transparent walking surface evokes the sensation of floating, while an inclined guardrail facing the valley enhances the sense of openness. On the opposite side, a vertical parapet ensures safety along the rock face. The walkway’s variable width introduces a subtle spatial rhythm that guides and frames the viewing experience.
The existing rock platform is upgraded with textured anti-slip glass panels mounted on adjustable supports, and bordered by a transparent Carl-Stahl X-Tend mesh guardrail, fixed with tensioned cables to steel brackets—ensuring safety without obstructing the panoramic views.
The construction strategy relies on modular prefabrication and minimal site intervention. A central anchor node, discreetly embedded in the rock and connected to the main beam, reduces the number of anchor points and preserves the integrity of the natural formation. All elements are designed for rapid on-site assembly with minimal environmental impact and maximum adaptability to extreme weather conditions.
Balancing advanced engineering, sustainability, and restrained design, HORIZN offers a layered, reimagined experience that amplifies the raw monumentality of Trolltunga while enhancing safety and accessibility. Architecture here becomes a mediating tool—discreet, empathetic, and visionary—bridging human presence and natural wonder.
