Original Spaces | Legalized Gestures

There are two types of inheritances – material (tangible objects) and immaterial (those stored in the body and mind: images, sounds, smells, etc., which emerge when triggered by various factors).
We are building an installation that brings together inheritances from three individuals. Sound, the performers’ movements, light (alongside the technical elements present in the space – speakers, subwoofers, stands, microphones, etc.), objects, and characters are assembled into a composition that each viewer navigates freely and perceives subjectively, based on their own decisions in how they use the space.

The installation contains a series of reference points that give the space a sense of concreteness (artworks, newspapers, etc.). It has an ephemeral nature, being designed to be dismantled, movable, and itinerant.

“Original Spaces | Legalized Gestures” has been reconfigured in three different spaces (in Bucharest at the /SAC @Malmaison gallery, on the theater stage in Baia Mare, and in Cluj as part of the international dance festival – OM) over the course of seven months. With each new installation, the spatial density increased through the gradual addition of works by Dimitrie Gora. Initially there were 3, then another 6 appeared.

The characteristics of the installation reflect the categories of things we are left with.

The aesthetic of the performative space, which holds together tangible objects (the works of artist Dimitrie Gora, Ioana’s inherited objects, and Simona’s collection of newspapers inherited from her grandfather), is designed to be “neutral” in order to encourage spectators to relate their own experiences to the specific inheritances presented within the installation.

At the center, there is a segmented accordion screen, reassembled based on the needs dictated by the overall choreography.
A screen perforated by tandem (inter)action. An articulated wall on wheels, an attractor of newspapers, spoons, bags, binoculars, and a tooth.

Note: The performative installation is the result of an evolving project that began on September 13, 2024, in Bucharest at the /SAC Malmaison gallery, continued on October 1, 2024, at the Baia Mare Theatre, on October 11 in Cluj at the OM International Dance Festival, and concluded with its final presentation on February 16, 2025, in Bucharest at the /SAC Malmaison gallery.
