Authors’ Comment

The exploitation of the built-up fund, especially of the disused industrial spaces, plays a role in limiting the decline and revitalizing the economic, social, and cultural aspects of cities.
The project aims to reconnect the center of Braila with the industrial harbour area, which is in an advanced state of degradation. The chosen land, located on the border between the two areas, includes the historic building of the former Valerianos & Lykiardopoulos mill. The exploitation of this building, as well as of the land, aims to develop the economy of Braila and represents a way for the city and the community to find a new cultural and social identity.
The Danube has always been the driving force behind the city’s industrial development , alongside that of milling. Thus, the river forms the basis of the proposal for the functional conversion of this complex into a center for education, research, and exhibition of river navigation. Therefore, the public and private parts are combined, new community spaces are created based on the desire to raise awareness of the importance of river navigation. The refurbishment is thus developed around three essential elements for the city’s development: culture, education, and economy.
