This project addresses the cultural and urban potential of the city of Pitești and the need to revitalize its central public space. It proposes the extension of the pedestrian network and the creation of a new cultural hub. The intervention is framed within local and regional urban development strategies and is supported by the Municipality of Pitești and the Argeș County Council, through the Integrated Urban Development Strategy (SIDU).
The proposal is located adjacent to the “Al. Davila” Theatre and the Art Gallery on Victoriei Street, in the historical and cultural heart of the city. Its primary objective is to complete and strengthen the pedestrian axis by integrating a new public space into an area historically left fragmented by incomplete 1960s systematization. The intervention reorients pedestrian flow toward the nearby park, with the adjacent high school functioning as a visual and spatial terminus.
The project introduces a new cultural stratum situated 10 meters below street level, creating an architectural void that supports public, cultural, and performative activities. This new volume acts as an infrastructural platform that respects the surrounding urban fabric, ensuring continuity in both function and form. By doing so, it provides a stage for large-scale artistic programming—such as theater, dance, and concerts—within a flexible, contemporary setting.
A key intention is to insert a discreet yet legible architectural landmark that facilitates spatial coherence and pedestrian legibility between the existing urban fragments. The proposed cultural center thus becomes a connector—an urban hinge—between the city’s main civic institutions, enhancing both their accessibility and symbolic relationship.
The project contributes to the consolidation of the city’s urban identity by reactivating residual central spaces and weaving them into a unified and meaningful cultural narrative. The strategic partnership between the Municipality of Pitești and the Argeș County Council ensures the project’s long-term sustainability, offering a unique opportunity to support artistic production and urban regeneration in tandem.
