Brașov, the city of seven guild bastions, has built its identity over time upon a strong tradition of craftsmanship. Throughout the centuries, this heritage has become a pillar of local culture, deeply woven into the urban fabric and the collective memory of the city. The guild bastions, erected and maintained by the trades, served not only defensive purposes; they were also active spaces where craftsmen practiced their trades—functioning as urban anchors within the historical city. The project is located in the medieval heart of Brașov, adjacent to the former city walls. From an architectural standpoint, the proposal draws directly from the specificity of its context, rooted in the tectonic language of the historic walls. The design follows a mimetic approach to contextual integration. As a whole, the project expresses a playful architectural dialogue through a dichotomy of “muros” and “peristylos.” Inspired by the logic of the bastions, the proposal reinterprets medieval fortifications through a composition centered around a core dedicated to artisanal activities, enclosed by an active perimeter wall that houses complementary functions. This configuration reflects the balance between permanence—echoing the defensive character of the Tailors’ Bastion’s Zwinger—and adaptability in the contemporary urban landscape. The wall preserves, connects, and mediates, while the central core encourages social interaction and craft production. The intervention also enhances the presence of the historical city wall by proposing a promenade alongside it, leading to a small urban square that orients visitors toward the historic structure—transforming it into an active, integrated element of the city’s public realm. In contrast to the bastion-like central volume—introverted and focused—there is a second, extroverted body that occupies the former site of the public bathhouse. This secondary volume is community-oriented, accommodating public functions such as a bookstore, educational workshops, event spaces, and gathering areas. The functional program reflects the project’s guiding principles: spaces for specialized workshops and training, areas for exhibition and social interaction, all dedicated to community engagement. The Bastion of the Artists transcends the role of a simple community center—it becomes a cultural instrument aimed at revitalizing urban identity and reactivating cultural memory. It provides a spatial and architectural framework for preserving traditional crafts and ensuring their transmission into the future.
