The proposed project for the Swimming Center in northern Bucharest reflects a contemporary vision of sports infrastructure—conceived not merely as functional facilities, but as dynamic public spaces with social and urban significance.
Strategically sited at the intersection of major city arteries within a well-established sports district (Șoseaua Fabrica de Glucoză, Calea Floreasca și Strada Barbu Văcărescu), the location provides an ideal framework for developing a complex that transcends mere utility. The architectural concept seeks to harmonize athletic performance with complementary amenities—relaxation zones, educational venues, and cultural facilities—thereby fostering a healthy lifestyle and enhancing community cohesion.
Water is the compositional centerpiece, valued both as a natural resource and as a medium for movement and interaction. The project leverages the lake’s shores by incorporating an expansive urban park linked to Verdi Park via pedestrian bridges, creating a seamless transition zone between the city and nature.
The volume of the two built structures is inspired by the motion of a swimmer emerging from the water, visually expressing the dynamism of sport and providing the ensemble with a distinctive architectural identity.
Through this intervention, the aim is not only to address deficiencies in sports infrastructure, but also to establish a new, sustainable, and inclusive urban landmark that activates the landscape and promotes social integration. The Center thus becomes an interface—between city and water, between individual and community—a space of encounter and transformation.
