Architecture does not function as an isolated discipline; rather, it exists and evolves in constant dialogue with other creative and cultural fields. The experience of the academic journey has shaped a personal dimension of the creative process through the discovery of fashion design. The relationship between architecture and fashion becomes relevant to the idea of interdisciplinarity, as both fields involve the construction of identity, the manipulation of forms and materials, as well as interpretation and engagement with a cultural and social context. Both are methods of articulating space: architecture shapes the built environment at the urban scale, while fashion defines the intimate space of the body, both expressing personality and collective or individual identity.
Thus, the Diploma Project explores the potential of the Fashion House as an emblematic architectural object in the revitalization of the Coehoorn district. Strategically positioned in close proximity to the historic city center and as part of the city’s fashion and design route, the Fashion House becomes an active component of urban regeneration, a platform for innovation and design, a source of local identity. It is a spatial expression of creativity, an urban overlock stitching gesture that seeks to mend a fragmented and depersonalized context. Similar to a seam that prevents a fabric from unraveling, the Fashion House and the artist residency reconstruct the urban and social identity of the neighborhood. At the same time, the relationship between architecture and fashion is explored through the shaping of volumes, starting from the idea of pleated textile material. The fabric unfolds across the site, connecting the building volumes in a coherent and fluid composition, one that merges concept, functionality, and architectural expression. This spatial choreography is based on the concept of "dressness", where the interior is defined by pleated forms. On the facades, these pleats become drapery, revealing and announcing the building’s interior language.
In conclusion, this project is an architectural statement
positioned at the intersection of architecture and fashion. Through the metaphor of urban serging, the Fashion House strengthens the edge of a frayed urban fabric, reweaving connections between people and the city itself. It is a space where creation and community coexist, where expression becomes environment, and where fabric becomes structure and structure becomes story.
