The Design Concept
The design of the Italian-style bar draws direct inspiration from the movie La Grande Bellezza , exploring
the contrast between surface-level beauty and deeper emotional resonance—a recurring theme
throughout the film’s poetic and visually rich scenes.
Even though the design is replicating literal elements from the movie, the interior design captures its
atmosphere: a decadent, theatrical world where beauty, irony, and melancholy coexist. The boldness of
Roman nightlife is reflected in eclectic, daring décor choices—mirroring the film’s tension between chaos
and elegance. Carefully chosen references to key moments in the film are subtly integrated into the space,
inviting guests to discover them organically, much like the film reveals its emotional core through layered
imagery.
Expansion and Adaptability
This concept embraces flexibility and transformation, echoing the transience so central to La Grande
Bellezza. The furniture is intentionally mismatched, not for aesthetic randomness, but to allow for
constant reinvention. Pieces can be replaced or rearranged over time, echoing the film’s rhythm of fleeting
parties, shifting perspectives, and impermanence. Just as the film blurs the line between the artificial and
the authentic, the space celebrates imperfect beauty—objects with history, rather than flawless design.
Set in a historic interwar building typical of Bucharest’s center, the space retains its original textures—wall
paintings, flooring—augmented only minimally. A black metal framework unifies the varied décor while
protecting the building’s architectural integrity. It supports lighting and signage without damaging the
structure, and allows new configurations without altering the space permanently.
The bar’s indoor-outdoor extension improves accessibility and creates a soft transition between the
interior and the city, much like the film’s own blend of personal introspection and public spectacle. Open,
inclusive, and ever-evolving, the space becomes a lived-in stage for new stories.
In the end, La Grande Bellezza speaks not just of beauty, but of time, memory, and emotional truth. This
design draws from that essence—not just by exposing the movie scenes, but by embodying its spirit. The
result is a space where visual richness meets quiet introspection, inviting guests into their own version of
la grande bellezza.
