The concept of the project is based on the relationship between art, technology and community, with the idea of creating a centre where art is not only exhibited, but also produced, experimented with and shared. The theme responds to the transformations brought by digital technology to the artistic field and to the need for spaces dedicated to creation, research and experimentation. The centre addresses artists, students, researchers and the general public through exhibitions, workshops and events.
The design process started with the analysis of the site, located at the intersection of Oituz and Popa Șapcă Streets, between the historic centre and the university area of Timișoara. The two main axes of movement and perception identified on the site influenced the positioning of the volumes and the organization of the entrances. An important element of the analysis was the façade of the former Military Canteen, which was preserved and integrated into the new intervention in order to maintain the memory of the place and the continuity of the urban image.
Starting from this relationship between the existing and the new, one of the first volumetric operations was the setback of the new volumes from the existing façade. The space created at ground level becomes a public passage and an entrance area, allowing visitors to perceive the historic façade before entering the building. At the upper levels, the cantilevered volumes approach the preserved façade, creating a different relationship between the existing architecture and the contemporary intervention. The project therefore does not attempt to imitate the existing architecture, but to create a dialogue between the memory of the place and contemporary architecture.
The concept of discursive organization allows visitors to gradually discover the activities of the centre. The journey begins in the public areas of the ground floor, with reception, exhibition and interaction spaces, continues towards the projection spaces and the Black Box, and reaches the upper levels dedicated to education and production: workshops, laboratories, classrooms and prototyping spaces. Visual relationships between these areas allow visitors to observe the artistic process, rather than only its final result. The journey therefore becomes part of the concept, and the building is understood as a sequence of experiences.
The separation of public and production flows allows the different activities to function independently while maintaining visual relationships between users.
The structural solution supports this organization. The basement, ground floor and first floor are designed with a steel structure using IPE 300 columns and reinforced concrete beams, while the second and third floors use an independent bridge-like steel structure with IPE 400 columns and three-dimensional beams. The façade consists of an aluminium and glass curtain wall, complemented by an independent metal substructure and perforated panels with variable transparency, which filter natural light and the perception of the interior.
The relationship between interior and exterior is treated as a filter. The curtain wall provides transparency and visual contact with the city, while the metal panels create different degrees of openness and contribute to the identity of the building. The façade therefore supports the idea of a gradual discovery of the building and its activities.
Ultimately, the form and organization of the project result from the combination of several factors: the urban context, the memory of the place, movement directions, the programme and the visitor’s journey. The structure, façade and functional organization follow the same logic, transforming the concept into a coherent architectural system. The centre thus becomes a place where art, technology and community meet, while architecture provides the framework for creation, experimentation, education and participation.
The project aims to transform the centre into an active and flexible cultural infrastructure. The visitor is not only an observer of completed works, but can become part of a process of discovery, experimentation and exchange of ideas.
