The project proposes the reintegration of the Danube riverside into Braila’s urban structure and the intervention on the Violatos Mill through consolidation, restoration, adaptive reuse and extension. The approach starts from the historical relationship between Braila and the Danube, as the city’s development has been closely connected to access to the water, port activities, and its industrial and commercial functions. Today, however, the riverside remains insufficiently connected to the city and underused, despite its proximity to the historic centre and its strategic urban and landscape position.
The intervention on the riverside aims to restore the relationship between the city, the waterfront and the Danube. The main challenge is the approximately 12 m difference in level between the city and the riverbank, which reinforces the separation between the two areas. The project addresses this condition through pedestrian routes, promenades, green spaces, platforms and public areas, transforming the level difference from a barrier into part of the spatial structure. Parks, commercial spaces and recreational areas are introduced, while the routes are organized in relation to existing points of interest. The riverside becomes a continuous public space linking the city and water. A new pier extends the public realm towards the Danube and creates new perspectives towards the ensemble.
Within this strategy, the Violatos Mill becomes the main architectural and cultural landmark. Its heritage value is treated as a resource for the regeneration of the surrounding urban area. The historic mill buildings are preserved and enhanced through consolidation, restoration and rehabilitation, while being adapted to contemporary requirements. The conversion does not seek to recreate a historical image, but to preserve the character, structure and industrial memory through a new use.
The mill is transformed into a cultural, educational and hospitality hub, combining a cultural centre, educational facilities, exhibition and event spaces, multifunctional halls, workshops, offices, commercial spaces, food and beverage functions, and hotel accommodation. This mixed programme allows the ensemble to remain active throughout the day and creates connections between cultural, educational, commercial and tourist activities. Functions are distributed according to the characteristics of the existing buildings, with each volume used according to its spatial capacity and architectural value.
The new extension completes the ensemble without competing with the historic structure. It accommodates functions requiring larger areas, flexible spaces or contemporary configurations that are difficult to integrate into the existing mill. It therefore acts as a complement to the heritage, rather than an imitation of it, establishing a dialogue between historic and contemporary architecture.
The project consequently proposes more than the conversion of an industrial building. It creates a continuous relationship between the city, the riverside, heritage and the Danube. The regeneration of the waterfront establishes the urban framework, the restoration of the Violatos Mill preserves the identity of the place, while its conversion and extension provide it with a purpose. The resulting ensemble becomes a new cultural and educational destination for Braila, capable of reactivating a fragmented territory and turning industrial heritage into an active urban resource.
