The project “Production and Knowledge Infrastructure” proposes the reactivation of the former Guban industrial platform in Timișoara by transforming it into a contemporary urban complex dedicated to production, research, education, culture and mobility. The concept starts from the idea that industrial heritage should not be preserved as a static image of the past, but reactivated as a living infrastructure capable of generating new forms of production and knowledge. The memory of the place thus becomes a resource for constructing the future: what the city was, what it is, and what it aspires to become are brought together within a single infrastructure. The existing structures are reused and reprogrammed, while the void left by the disappearance of the central building becomes the support for a contemporary intervention that restores the spatial and functional relationships of the complex.
The intervention is conceived as a permeable, flexible and programmatically adaptable infrastructure, in which different activities can interact and transform the way the complex is used over time. Rather than proposing an isolated architectural object, the project creates a system of buildings, routes, courtyards and public spaces that connect with one another and make the activities taking place inside visible. Programmatic flexibility allows the overlapping and alternation of production, exhibition, research, education and event-based activities, enabling the complex to respond to different needs and scenarios of use.
The programme combines a museum component with spaces for production and applied research, complemented by a library, study spaces, conference facilities, offices, a restaurant and food court. The museum presents the industrial evolution of Timișoara through permanent and temporary exhibitions, while moving beyond the conventional model of passive display: production processes, experimentation and technology become part of the visitor’s experience. Makerspaces, prototyping workshops and laboratories establish a direct relationship between knowledge and production, allowing research and experimentation to become exhibition content. The bus station introduces an additional dimension of mobility and generates a continuous flow of people, transforming the complex into a point of transit and encounter. The visitor therefore does not enter an isolated museum, but is welcomed by an active infrastructure in which the first experience is one of the city itself: its industrial identity, its cultural objectives and its technological aspirations.
The significance of the project lies in its ability to reconnect the industrial memory of the city with contemporary economy, education and technology. The Guban site, today fragmented and partially abandoned, is transformed from an inert territory into an active public space connected to the university environment, the technological sector and the community. The project proposes a form of active heritage in which the industrial past is not simply preserved and exhibited, but continued through production, research, learning and innovation. Through this overlap of functions, the complex becomes an urban infrastructure capable of connecting memory with the future, material production with knowledge production, and the local city with regional flows, offering Timișoara a place that does not simply speak about its identity, but puts it back into motion.
