The revitalization of the “Ciocanul” Vocational School proposes the transformation of the former educational complex on Calea Dudești into a contemporary center for technical education, creative practice, and production, adapted to the current demands of the labor market. The project responds to the need to revitalize vocational education by proposing a new understanding of the vocational school: not simply as a place of training, but as an open, flexible, and collaborative environment where education, technology, culture, and the community come together.
The new school focuses on digital fabrication, CAD/CAM technologies, and regenerative industrial maintenance—fields that respond to technological transformation and the growing need for specialists capable of working with contemporary technologies. Learning is conceived primarily as a hands-on process, supported by specialized workshops, laboratories, and shared workspaces where theoretical knowledge is directly integrated into processes of design, prototyping, and production.
The architectural intervention aims to preserve and enhance the identity of the former complex by rehabilitating the existing buildings and complementing them with contemporary volumes. The new interventions are organized through a modular and flexible system capable of adapting over time to changing educational programs and technological requirements. Movable partitions, flexible furniture, and multifunctional spaces allow classrooms and workshops to be rapidly reconfigured according to different scenarios of use.
At the core of the educational process are the workshops, the learning commons, and the FabLab, conceived as spaces for experimentation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange. These are complemented by cultural and community-oriented functions such as the library, museum, bookstore, and event spaces. A public pedestrian route crosses the complex and connects these functions, opening the school towards the city and transforming it into a space accessible not only to students, but also to local residents and the professional community.
Thus, the project goes beyond the simple rehabilitation of an existing complex and proposes its reactivation as an educational, cultural, and social infrastructure. By combining heritage with contemporary technologies and programs, the “Ciocanul” Vocational School reclaims its role as a landmark for vocational education and becomes a catalyst for the revitalization of the area, preserving the memory of the place while directing it towards the future.
