SP4TIO, a proposed Graphic Arts, Publishing, and Culture Center at Calea Dudești 127 in Bucharest, directly addresses the speculative decay of heritage. The project intervenes on the historic ensemble of the former "Ciocanul" Vocational School, comprising the vocational school, former girls' school, and former kindergarten, reactivating and expanding it with new volumes. Based on interviews with local independent designers, the project translates their spatial needs into a clear adaptive reuse strategy. Avoiding passive museumification, the intervention recovers the historic vocation of the ensemble, originally an adaptable mechanism for education and production, turning it into an active creative hub.

The dialogue between old and new is explored through a prospective approach to heritage. The solution preserves the historic buildings, converting the former girls' school into a mentorship hub, the former kindergarten into administrative offices, and the former vocational school into an exhibition and workspace. They are complemented by the new insertions defining the site: the vocational school extension (forming the Creative Core with the historic school), the street-facing Pavilion Gate, a rental studio workshop, and the UNARTE exhibition pavilion. Built as an autonomous, modular, and reversible steel structure using dry assembly, the new architecture allows future reconfiguration without harming the monument and ensures a fluid vertical transition from the porous ground floor, with open workshops and galleries, to the printing wing and studios above.

The core of the proposal is the spatial experience articulated by four thematic courtyards, acting as the programmatic engine of the ensemble and translating the design process stages into physical space. The Inspiration Patio marks the entry from the city, framed by the historic buildings and the Pavilion Gate, with a comic book store on the ground floor and a coffee shop above; it fosters informal dialogue and public contact, where first ideas emerge. The Exploration Patio, between the Creative Core, mentorship hub, and UNARTE pavilion, matches the experimentation stage, offering an open setting for testing concepts and events.

The journey continues in the Creation Patio, sheltered in the alcove formed by the former "Ciocanul" School and its extension. Connected to the workspaces and printing wing, this courtyard is the productive heart of the center, supporting hands-on work, collaboration, and prototyping. Finally, the Reflection Patio, tucked near the former girls' school, offers an intimate, quiet microclimate for contemplation, critical analysis, and re-evaluation. This sequence of atmospheres makes creative work visible across the site, removing the barrier between isolated studio creation and public display.

In essence, SP4TIO is both a rigorous architectural ensemble and an evolving spatial narrative based on preservation through use. Showing that legal protection of a monument without functional and economic reactivation leads to decay, the project uses continuous creative production to save heritage. Through a strong social contract where resident artists host public workshops and exhibitions, the center restores a vibrant cultural landmark to the city, supporting independent designers and the urban fabric.
