To acces the French roof, you had to go on a very steep ladder. Therefore, we decided to replace it, by continuing the existing lower floor terrazzo staircase with a new one. We kept the shape, reinterpreting it just by changing the material to dark steel. We demolished the old separations inside the French roof, creating an opened, generous space for a living+dining room, a kitchen and a small toilet. The wooden structure of the roof was conserved, kept exactly the way we found it. Because it had no natural light, we cut 7 skylights in the roof. Working with the idea of a space bathed in light, we chose natural light colored finishings: birch plywood-as main material and pine flooring. Plywood was used from closing the roof insulation, to furniture and separation walls. This warm, light material comes in both contrast and dialogue with the raw dark cold steel of the staircase. At the end, we got this homogenuos, warm, filled with light space.
